Deep tissue massage
in Chico

Slow, specific pressure into the deeper layers of muscle that hold chronic tension. Warmed up to rather than forced, and checked with you as it goes.

What it is

Deeper, not harder.

Deep tissue massage works the deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue around them: the places a light, flowing massage never quite reaches. It is slower than most people expect. Pressure goes in gradually, along the line of the muscle, and stays long enough for the tissue to respond.

Done well, deep work should not feel like something to grit your teeth through. Isaac starts soft and works down in layers, which is the thing clients mention most. In one review: “He starts about softer and warms the muscles up to get in deeper.”

Pressure is checked as the session goes. If something is too much, it changes. If you want more, say so. Both are useful information, at any point in the hour.

Who it suits

For tension that has settled in.

Deep tissue work is for muscles that have been tight for months, not days, and for bodies that are asked to do a lot.

Chronic tightness

The upper back that lives at a desk, the low back that never quite lets go, the shoulders that have crept up toward the ears over years.

Training load

Runners, lifters, climbers and cyclists whose legs, hips and shoulders carry the work. See sports massage for training and race timing.

Recovery from injury

Tissue that has guarded an old injury for too long. Bring the history, including any physical therapy you are doing alongside.

The session

What a deep tissue session looks like

01

The conversation

Where it hurts, for how long, what aggravates it and what you have already tried. That decides where the time goes.

02

Warming up

Broader, lighter strokes first, so the tissue is ready before any pressure goes deep.

03

Specific work

Slow pressure into the areas that need it, often alongside myofascial release or cupping. You are draped throughout.

04

Afterwards

Fifteen minutes of buffer follows every appointment. Drink water, move gently, and expect the area to feel worked for a day or so.

Pricing

Book the length, not the technique.

There is no separate deep tissue booking. Every massage on the menu is tailored, so choose a length and mention deep tissue at the intake. For one problem area, 30 or 45 minutes is enough; for deep work across the whole body, 90 minutes gives the tissue time.

“Thank you Isaac for being such a wonderful human being and healer. He is a master at his craft and seems to truly love what he does and loves sharing the plentiful benefits of massage. He has a special kind of touch that carries that perfect weight and pressure without sending you off the table. He's great at listening to my needs and tailoring each session accordingly.”

“I've been going to Isaac for a long time now, and he is so attentive and very much an expert in his field, very knowledgeable and very charismatic and definitely listens to what I have to say. I always come out feeling a lot better body wise, which helps since I've been pretty achy after an accident.”

Questions

Deep tissue massage, answered

It should feel strong, sometimes intense on a specific spot, but never like something you have to brace against. Bracing tightens the muscle, which defeats the point.

Isaac works up to depth gradually and checks in as he goes. Say the word and the pressure changes.

Not quite. Firm pressure can be applied quickly over a wide area. Deep tissue work is slower and more specific: it follows individual muscles and the connective tissue between them, and it stays in one place long enough for the tissue to respond.

Some tenderness for a day or two is common after deep work, a bit like the day after a hard workout. Water, gentle movement and a warm shower help.

Anything sharp, or anything that gets worse instead of better, is worth mentioning at your next session or to your doctor.

It depends on what you're working on. People with a specific problem often come more often at first and space sessions out as things improve; others book monthly to keep on top of it. Isaac will tell you what he thinks after the first session.

Yes. Cupping, myofascial release and deep tissue work are all tools Isaac uses within a single massage, and most sessions use more than one.

No. Tell Isaac before the session if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, bruise easily, have had recent surgery, a history of blood clots, or any condition you're unsure about. Some of these call for lighter work, and some need your doctor's okay first.
